Azalea vs iCloud Photos

iCloud Photos is a library bound to an Apple ID. Optimize iPhone Storage uploads originals and leaves preview-sized files on the device. You can pull a full file back while the subscription and the password still work. That is not a copy you can unplug, and it is not a copy an Android phone can open.

Originals vs placeholders

Azalea exports PhotoKit assets as files. HEIC, DNG, and 4K clips are not recompressed to “save space.” The March 2026 iPhone 15 run wrote 86.4 GB across 18,432 items; Settings → Photos reported 88.1 GB. The gap was caches, not a storage-saver ladder.

iCloud’s optimize switch is the opposite job: free local gigabytes by parking bytes in Apple’s cloud. After it runs, opening a photo on the phone may download. A later factory reset without that Apple ID does not bring the library with you.

Account lock vs media you hold

Keys for COS / OSS / S3 live in the on-device keychain. USB is a folder bookmark; Samba is a LAN share. None of those credentials are an Azalea account. iCloud Shared Photo Library is an Apple ID invite. Two phones writing one NAS share is a filesystem. They look similar on a slide and fail differently when an account is locked.

USB, NAS, object storage

iCloud Photos will not write the roll onto an exFAT stick hanging off the Lightning or USB-C port. Azalea will. Object storage is your bucket and your invoice. There is no 5 GB or 200 GB Apple plan hiding the original files.

Claiming on the next phone

Apple’s path off iPhone is export, a cable, or another iPhone. Azalea’s path is the same bucket or the same on-disk .album/manifest.jsonl. The Pixel 8 → iPhone 16 lab run used that claim in one direction; iPhone → Android is the same mechanism reversed. iCloud Photos does not participate.

Who should stay

If every device in the house is Apple, Shared Photo Library is enough, and you will never need a file on a Windows box, keep iCloud Photos. Turn Optimize on only after an Azalea USB or S3 copy has been spot-opened. Do not let iCloud delete locals while a first backup is still running.
