A 128 or 256 GB iPhone fills up on 4K and Live Photos. The worst response to “Not Enough Storage” is a bulk delete in Photos. Those files have no second copy. If the search is iPhone storage full photos and you want to keep them, make the second copy first. Azalea exports PhotoKit originals to USB, S3, COS, OSS, or Samba. It does not host originals. Bundle net.duguying.photos. Azalea will not flip Optimize iPhone Storage for you.

Write down the Photos line in Settings (88.1 GB on the lab phone). Backup until Pending is 0. Spot-check the last week and the longest clip. Then Optimize, or delete 4K you have already opened on the disk. A week later Photos was 41.6 GB; the disk library had not moved.

If the iCloud plan is also full, Optimize stalls because originals cannot upload. That was the March machine, which is why USB went first. Recently Deleted is a 30-day wish, not a backup. Use Diagnostics before you treat the camera roll as disposable.

Device that was actually full

iPhone 15, iOS 18.6.1, 256 GB. iCloud Photos on, 200 GB plan full, upload errors looping. Settings → iPhone Storage: 241.3 GB used, Photos 88.1 GB. Optimize was off, so locals were still originals. SanDisk Extreme 1 TB, exFAT, folder azalea/15-lab. 14 Mar 2026: 17,891 stills, 541 videos, 18,432 items, 92,778,479,616 bytes (86.41 GB), 257 minutes, ~5.72 MB/s. Twenty-three colon names escaped. Unrecoverable: 0. Phone locked around two hours; Live Activity stayed; task halted; reopen resumed.

English S3 is the other target (us-west-2 in April’s Pixel run). When the phone is already full, USB avoids Wi-Fi PUT time. 4K first if you need Available to move today: back up 4K video first.

Steps

Do not Select All in Photos. Screenshot Settings → iPhone Storage.
Install Azalea if you still can. If install fails for space, delete a verified-unneeded app or offload something that is not the camera roll, then install. Allow Full Access. Selected Photos is not a rescue of the full library.
Cloud Album → Backup Storage → USB Device (pick folder in Files, bookmark, no volume list) or S3 keys. Test Connection for buckets. Do not pick iCloud Drive as the folder.
Automatic backup. USB stays in the foreground. Resume Backup after lock. Check again after replug. Status: Pending, Failed.
When Pending is 0, open originals on the destination: last week’s shots, longest 4K, one Live Photo pair. Bytes, not thumbnails.
Settings → Photos → Optimize iPhone Storage, or delete only videos you watched on the disk. Recheck Photos in Settings days later. Disk or bucket size must hold.

Huawei Mate 60 numbers (36.64 GB, yank at 61%, twelve temps) are Android; the lesson still applies: do not delete phone copies during a pause. Pixel 8 → iPhone 16 (11,614 items, 81.95 GB) shows that a claimed iPhone can keep Recents empty and still hold the library — useful after you migrate, not the first move when this iPhone is the only copy.

Live Photos are easy to miscount when the phone is full. Each one is a still plus a motion clip, so deleting “one photo” in the grid can free more than a HEIC, or less than a 4K file, and the Photos line in Settings will not tell you which. Open the pair on the disk before you remove it from the phone. Hidden and Recently Deleted still occupy blocks until you empty them; they are not a second copy, and they do not appear on the USB volume unless Azalea exported them while they were still visible to PhotoKit under Allow Full Access.

One failure: Optimize on a full iCloud plan

Optimize does not free space if iCloud cannot take originals. You wait, or you think placeholders exist when they do not. USB or S3 is the copy that does not care about Apple quota. After USB succeeded, Optimize then dropped Photos to 41.6 GB because iCloud could accept the already-uploaded set or iOS could evict against iCloud’s copy — the lab’s second week. The disk stayed 86.41 GB. That disk is what you take to Android. iCloud is not.

Wrong-region S3 fails Test Connection. Offloading after that error deletes hope, not duplicates. Colon names: escaped on disk; do not rename in Explorer or claim breaks. Finder DCIM copies have no index and are a poor “I freed space” plan because you still need to delete from Photos by hand without a ledger.

Will Azalea delete photos on the iPhone when backup finishes?

No. There is no “delete locally, keep in our cloud” control. There is no our-cloud. You use iOS settings or you delete items you have opened on the destination.

Why was the copy only 5.7 MB/s?
